Hello there!
As I write, some yellow leaves are falling from the wild cherry trees, the goldenrod and golden glow wildflowers are blazing, and tiny insect-eating warblers are gathering in the tree tops prior to their long trip south. In short - fall is nearly here!

Below and attached, please find a schedule of late September and October public nature programs. Your continued support of Trailside's programs has resulted in many new families "discoving" Trailside, and the natural beauty of their Forest Preserves. Thank you!

Morning Fitness Hike: Enjoy a brisk 2 mile hike with a Naturalist, while viewing nature along the scenic trails near Trailside Museum. Meet at the Museum entrance. For adults. Free! Saturday, Sept. 15, 9:00 a.m.

I See Trees: Children ages 8 - 14 and their parents will enjoy a special nature walk through the woods as they learn to recognize some common trees by leaf, bark, fruit and habitat. Free! Please register for this program by calling 708-366-6530. Sunday, Sept. 23, 1:00 p.m.

Meet a Snake and Turtle: Children and parents are invited to learn about, see and touch some local reptiles. There will also be a fun snake craft! Drop-in program; free!
Sat., Sept.29, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.


Kid Fishing: Children ages 7 – 11 are invited to learn the basics of casting and fish ID, and then use that knowledge by doing some fishing in our pond! All materials provided. Space is very limited, pre-registration is required.

Nature Story Time: Nature-inspired stories, crafts and activities for ages 3 – 5 with an adult. $1.00 per child. Thursdays, October 4, 18 at 10:30 a.m.

Parent/Child Autumn Hike and Craft: Join us for a short autumn hike through the woods, and then make a beautiful wearable fall craft to take home! Children must be 8 or older; each with an adult. $10.00 material fee per each parent/child combo. Please register in advance as space is
limited.  Sunday, October 7, 1:00 p.m.

Tree ID Color Walk: Join us for a relaxing autumn walk on our trails as we admire colorful leaves, while learning to identify trees by leaf, bark and bud. For adults. Free;
please register in advance. Sunday,
October 14, 1:00 p.m.

Morning Fitness Hike: Join us for a brisk Naturalist-led 2 mile hike on our trails. Meet at the entrance of Trailside Museum. For adults.

Schiller Woods Restoration: Join your neighbors in restoring plant and wildlife habitat to prairies and woodlands at Schiller Woods Forest Preserve. Meet at
Grove 8; enter at Irving Park Rd. near Des Plaines

River Rd. Bring work gloves, all tools provided.

Ghosts of River Forest: This area has been inhabited by many people and cultures over time. Join us for some stories, legends and history of the Native Americans and early European settlers of the Des Plaines River valley.

Afterwards, we’ll take a walk to see signs of their presence

that still persist to this day.  Family program; free.
