today that property owners who sustained flood damage from the July
heavy rainfall would not qualify for aid. According to the Cook County
Department of Homeland
Security & Emergency Management, the Illinois Emergency Management
Association determined that the amount of damage reported was
insufficient for a disaster declaration, which is necessary to trigger
financial support programs. Click
here to read the letter from the County. The determination was
based on damage reports from across the entire county and not just in
Oak Park.
County officials say that the process used to gather information from property owners is being converted from the cumbersome paper form to an online submission mechanism for future events. In the meantime, Village officials say they are continuing to investigate ways to lessen the chance of flooding from heavy rainfalls, including using video cameras to inspect sewer lines, seeking quotes to update the Village's 1993 sewer system plan and researching communities that have local basement flood-prevention programs to determine what might work in Oak Park. A presentation to the Village Board detailing the results of their findings is planned. For more information, call 708.358.5791 or e-mail cole@oak-park.us.
